ADLs
eating, dressing, bathing, toilet, traveling, bowel and bladder control, sometimes grooming and walking a distance of eight feet
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL)
measure of physical function, more easily supplemented than ADLs, ex cooking, shopping, housekeeping, money management, traveling alone; generally not used in institutional setting (people are not required to perform ADLs)

main goal of long term care, teach adaptation, allow and motivate patient to do what he/she wants

unlike acute care, LTC extends over a period of time

Community Based LTC
supplement informal care wherever necessary, delay or prevent institutionalization, provide respite to family members when necessary
Sources of Funding for LTC
Medicare and to a lesser extent Medicaid (home health care); Federal Administration on Aging; state units on aging; area agencies on aging (Older Americans Act of 1965, Ombudsman (responsible for investigating and resolving complaints from consumers and other members of the public))
