Definition of Radio Waves
light with very long wavelengths (and hence low frequencies)—longer than those of infrared light
Definition of Wavelength
the distance between adjacent peaks or troughs of a wave
Definition of Frequency
describes the rate at which peaks of wave pass by a point; measured in units o f 1/s, often called cycles per second or hertz
Definition of Electromagnetic Spectrum
the complete spectrum of light, including radio waves, infrared, visivle light, ultraviolet light, X rays, and gamma
Definition of Speed of Light
the speed at which light travels, which is about 300,000 km/s
Definition of Ultraviolet
light with wavelength that fall in the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X rays.
Definition of X-ray
light with wavelengths that fall in portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between ultraviolet light and gamma rays
Definition of Gamma Rays
light with very short wavelengths (an hence high frequencies)—shorter than those of X rays
Definition of Photon
an individual particle of light, characterized by a wavelength and a frequency
Definition of Atom
consist of a nucleus made from protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons
