What is Ecology? |
The study of the relationship between organisms and their environment (both living and nonliving) |
Organism |
any living thing; it is a member of a particular species e.g. a duck or a pig or a tree |
Population |
a small group of the same species living a particular habitat; defined geographic location |
Community |
is a number of different kinds of population living together; a group of interacting populations of two or more different species that live together in the same area (all the living parts) |
Ecosystem |
is a community of living things interacting with each other and the non-living parts of the environment - the relationship between the biotic and the abiotic |
Habitat |
the natural home of an organism; the place where an organism lives. |
Environment |
an organisms surroundings; the place where an organism lives |
Biotic |
the living parts of an organisms environment |
Abiotic |
the non-living parts of an organism's environment |
smallest to largest- terminology |
organism population community ecosystem |
give some examples of ecosystems |
planet ocean forest log terrarium petri dish |
What do ecosystems need to be? |
self sustaining |
What can be measured in an ecosystem? |
Input and output of materials |
What do abiotic factors determine? (give example) |
The biotic factors that can survive in an environment eg. high rainfall+ high temp. + fertile soil + high sunlight = in a rain forest, lush green follage and lots of insects |
What's the diff in moving from one ecosystem to another? |
Gradual in the changes of the abiotic conditions eg. hard to find a rain forest right next to a desert |
