The oxygen of publicity, a metaphor coined by Margaret thatcher, explains terrorist group reliance of news media to publicise the acts of violence.
The media helps give 'oxygen'/necessary credibility/incredibility which fuels their terrorist cause .

THey seek legitimacy for the cause and want to cause visible damage e to their enemy.

The theory that the more attention a media outlet pays to a certain phenomenon, the more importance the public attributes become to such an issue.
