Define cells |
Cells are the building blocks of all livingthings. The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit ofall known living organisms. A cell is the smallest unit of life that canreplicate independently and, cells are often called the building block of life.
Define animal cells |
Cells are the building blocks of all livingthings, including animals. The typical animal cell contains smaller parts knownas organelles. Each organelle has its own specific job to do within the cell.
Define a vacuole in an animal cell |
There may be several small vacuoles in an animal cell. They may contain wastes or chemicals that are being moved around the cell
Define Nucleus |
The control centre of the cell. It controls allchemical reactions in the cell, how the develops and how it reproduces.
Cytoplasm |
A watery, jelly like mixture that contains many smaller parts where the work of the cell takes place.
Cell membrane |
The ’skin’ that holds the cell together. It controls what comes into and leaves the cell.
Define plant cells |
Plants have the same parts as animal cells plus a few extra parts. The vacuole in a plant cell is much larger than in animal cell. The Plant cells contain organelles called chloroplasts.
Define vacuole in a Plant cell |
The vacuole in plant cells is large and occupies mostof the cell. It is filled with sap and stores water, wastes and nutrients. Whenit is full the vacuole pushes against the cell wall and helps keeps the plantrigid.
Cell wall |
Plants do not have a skeleton, so they need somethingelse to keep them upright and to keep their shape. This is the function of thecell wall, which lies outside the cell membrane.

Venn diagram of similarities and differences in Animal and plant cells |
Animal cell: Lysosomes, small vacuoles Same: Vacuoles, nucleus, ribosomes, ednoplasmic-reticulum, plasma membrane, mitochondria Plant cell: cell wall, chloroplast, large vacuole |
Chloroplast |
Plants make their own food from water and carbondioxide (one of the gases in the air) using energy from the Sun. Photosynthesistales place in chloroplasts, which are found in the green parts of plants
Microscope definition |
A microscope is an optical instrument used for viewing very small objects, such as mineral samples or animal or plant cells, typically magnified several hundred times.
Mitochondria |
The power house of the cell that releases energy from food
Lysosomes |
The garbage disposal units that get rid of wastes from the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum |
Form pathways that allow materials to move quickly and easily through the cell
Ribosomes |
Microscopic factories that produce the proteins used by the body for growth and repair
