My brother and thy uncle called Antonio- i pray thee mark me - that a brother should be so perfidious! - he whom next thyself of all the world i loved, and to him put the manage of my state; as at that time Through all the signiories it was the first, and Prospero the prime duke , being so reputed in dignity and for the liberal arts without a parallel ; those being all my study , the government i cast upon my brother , and to my state grew stranger, being transported and rapt in secret studies. Thy false uncle- Dost thou attend me ?

My brother and your uncle called Antonio - please be attentive, listen carefully to what i say - i cannot imagine that a brother can be so treacherous. He, whom i loved next to you . Next to you , it was my brother whom i loved the most in the world. And to whom i handed over the management and the administration of my estate. And remember at that time, among all the small kingdoms and the states , my state was recognized as the first and I had the repuatation of being superior to all other dukes , in dignity and the knowledge of liberal arts. I gave myself entirely to my studies and i handed over the reins of the govenment to my brother and was out of touch with the affairs of my state. Being thus carried away and engrossed in private study , study of magic , your treacherous uncle - are you attentive to what i am saying ?

Being once perfected how to grant suits, how to deny them , who t'advance and who to trash for overtopping , new created the creatures that were mine , i say : or changed them , or else new formed them : having both the key of officer and office, set all hearts in the state to what tune pleased his ear, that now he was the ivy which had hid my princely trunk, and sucked my verdure out on't - thou attend'st not!

When my brother had mastered the art of administration, he had learned :

1. How to grant petitions

2. How to deny or refuse petitions

3. Whom to promote

4. Who to restrict from becoming overambitious.

He won the support of the officers who were appointed by me. He also replaced them or else altered their disposition and their habit , or in a way he actually reshaped them. He had now the control of all the officers and the duties . He won the hearts of all the people. They did exactly according to his will. They sang in the tune that pleased his ear. He was like an ivy, an evergreen climbing plant , that had covered up the trunk of the royal oak(prospero) and drawn in all life out of it(the power and authority). But you are not listening to me .

To have no screen between this part he played and him he played it for, he needs will be Absolute Milan. Me , poor man, my library was dukedom large enough. Of temporal royalties He thinks me now incapable; confederates - So dry he was for sway - with the King of naples to give him annual tribute , do him homage, subject his coronet to his crown, and bend the dukedom yet unbowed - alas , poor Milan! - to most ignoble stooping.

In order that there should be no barrier between the role that he play and the actual duke , he needed to beco.e the actual duke of milan. As for myself , antonio thought that my library was my dukedom large enough. He thought i was no more capable of public affairs and worldly powers. He thought i was incapable and unable to exercise my authority , and therefore he conspired. He conspired because he bacame thirsty for power. He conspired with the king of Naples , alonso . Therefore , they came into an agreement:

1. He promised to pay him an annual tribute.

2. He promised to him homage i.e. to pay due respect to him.

3. He agreed to hold the dukedom of Milan as a subordinate state of Naples.

-And how humiliating it was for milan which had never before been subject to any power. Milan came under the power and authority of naples. It was so sad that Milan had to bend without any honour.

Now the condition. This king of Naples , being an enemy to me inveterate, hearkens my brother's suit, which was that he , in lieu of the premises, of homage and I do not know how much tribute , should presently extirpate me and mine out of the dukedom, and confer fair Milan , with all the honours, on my brother; whereon, a treacherous army levuied , one midnight fated to the purpose did Antonio open the gates of Milan and in the dead of darkness the ministers for the purpose hurried thence me and thy crying self.

Note the terms of his agreement with the king of Naples . This king of naples being a long and bitter enemy of mine, confirmed and responded positively to my brother's proposal which was that he , in return for the promises of homage and alligiance to him an annual tribute though he is unaware of the amount to be paid as tribute.

He would immediately drive prospero out of his kingdom with all whatever was his and confer Milan, fair milan with all the honours and dignities onto my brother's command.

To do this , a disloyal army was raised , one fated or destined midnight , and antonio opened the gates of milan to a faithless army. And in the dead of the night , the agents were emplayed to carry out the task. They carried myself and you , a weeping child away.
