Temperature |
Measurement of temperature Temperature: how hot or cold an object is Heat: amount of thermal energy that is being transferred from a hotter to a colder region. |
|
A good thermometer has the following features: -Easy-to-read scale -Safe to use -Responsive to temperature change -Sensitive to small temperature change -Able to measure the required range of temperature |
Properties of some thermometers Volume of fixed mass of liquid: Mercury thermometer Electrical resistance of a piece of metal- Resistance thermometer Electrical voltage of electromotive force- Thermocouple thermometer |
|
Calibrating a liquid thermometer: 1. Choose an appropriate thermometric substance 2. Choose two fixed point 3. Divide the interval between the ice point and steam point into 100 equal parts, each interval is 1 degree Celsius |
Determining ice point: 1.Immerse the bulb and the lower part of the thermometer stem into a funnel containing ice 2. When the mercury level in the thermometer stem is ready make a mark at that level on the stem, that is the ice point |
|
Determining steam point: 1. Insert the thermometer into the apparatus. The bulb should be just above the boiling water. 2. The stem of the thermometer should protrude from the top of apparatus 3.When the mercury level in the thermometer stem remains steady make a mark at that level, that is the steam point |
Thermocouple: Consists of different metal like copper and iron. The ends of the wires are joined to form two junctions, which produce a small electromotive force when there is a temperature difference between them. |
