Temperate Forests

• Average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 10°C


• Average rainfall is 75-150cm a year


• 4 distinct seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter

Temperate Forest Zones

1. Tree Stratum Zone- height ranges between 20 feet and 30 metres


2. The Small Tree Zone- young, short trees


3. Shrub zone- Rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel and huckleberries


4. The Herb Zone- Short plants such as herbal plants


5. The Ground Zone- Contains lichen, club mosses and true mosses

Plant adaptations

• The plants have adapted to the forests by leaning toward the sun, soaking up the nutrients in the ground is also a way of adaptation


• Plants flower early (before trees fully leaf) to get as much sunlight as possible

Animals

• Some animals hibernate in the winter


• Some use trees to provide shelter, food and water sources


• Most of the animals are camouflaged to look like the ground
