planet

a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star.

radio telescope

an instrument used to detect radio emissions from the sky, whether from natural celestial objects or from artificial satellites

radio wave

an electromagnetic wave of a frequency between about 104 and 1011 or 1012 Hz, as used for long-distance communication.

reflecting telescope

telescope that uses a converging lens to collect light.

space telescope

n astronomical telescope that operates in space by remote control, to avoid interference by the earth's atmosphere.

spectrometer

an apparatus used for recording and measuring spectra, especially as a method of analysis.

ultraviolet (UV)

ultraviolet radiation definition. Radiation in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum where wavelengths are just shorter than those of ordinary, visible violet light but longer than those of x-rays.

visible light

Visible light is a form of electromagnetic (EM) radiation, as are radio waves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and microwaves. Generally, visible light is defined as the wavelengths that are visible to most human eyes.

wavelength

the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave.

X-ray

Often, x-rays. a form of electromagnetic radiation, similar to light but of shorter wavelength and capable of penetrating solids and of ionizing gases.
