What is at the center of the earth?

At the center of the earth is a ball of solid nickel and iron called the core.

What is around the core?

Around the core is the mantle, which s semi-molten rock that moves around the core.

What is the outer layer?

The outer layer of the earth is the crust. It's very thin around (20km)

Plates are made of what two types of crust?

Oceanic and continental.

What is are the characteristics of the oceanic crust?

Thinner and more dense.

What are the characteristics of the continental crust?

Thicker and less dense.

Why are plates moving?

The plates are moving because the rock in the mantle underneath them is moving.

What are the places where the plates meet called?

Plates boundaries or plate margins.

What are destructive plate margins?

Destructive plate margins are where two plates move towards each other e.g along the east coast of japan

-Where the oceanic plate meets the continental plate, the denser oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle and destroyed. This often creates volcanoes and ocean trenches .

What is a constructive plate margin?

A constructive plate margin is where two plates are moving away from eachother e.g the mid-Atlantic ridge. Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap and cools creating new crust.

What is a conservative plate margin?

Conservative plate margins are where two plate are moving sideways past each other or moving in the same direction at different speeds. e.g along the west coast of the USA. Crust isn't created or destroyed.
