Describe how the mobile phone network works?

1) Handset (also know as the UE or User Equipment).

2) Access Network or Basestation

RRU : Remote Radio Unit. Also known as the cell site or BTS (Basestation Transceiver). Facilitated wireless transmission between Basestation and UE (User Equipment).

Tower

BBU: Baseband Unit. The BBU is housed in the hut, and connected to the RRU through optical fibre.

eNodeB, this includes some RNC (Radio Network Controller) functions.

3) Core

What is described below is called a EPC (Evolved Packet Core).. Comprises the MME, SGW, and PGW.

MME : Mobile Management Entity.

SGW: Serving Gateway.

PGW: packet Data Gateway. This is the the gateway between the eNodeB and the internet.

HSS : Home subscriber Server. Stores static user data and active services.

PCRF : Policy Charging and Rules Function. In real time, applies policy rules to data packets and assigns QoS values.

No hint

What is the difference between 3G and 4G?

3G has a voice and data layer.

4G only has a data layer with QoS. But no separate voice layer.

Hk

What is the difference between 4G and 5G?

Well 5G is built on the back of 4G.

5G has the ability to use mm wave spectrum bands

Ability to better cater for the different use cases.

Greater speed and hence capacity. LTE Maximum is 1Gbps whereas 5G is 10 Gbps.

Gh

What is the difference between TDD and FDD?

TDD = Time Divisional Multiplexing

FDD = Frequency Division Multiplexing

What are the key technology breakthroughs with 5G

Massive MIMO. Describes 2 things. Each array has multiple antennas.

Beam forming. Can direct the individual beam to the user.

Described how the fixed network is configured in the NBN world?

To follow

Describe how a LAN works.

LAN use IP. Each node on the LAN has an IP address. Data is routed through the network based on IP addresses.

Describe the principles of IP?

IP stands for internet protocol.

Describe the principles of IP?

IP stands for internet protocol.

What is TCP IP? And how does it differ from UDP IP?

TCP send back an acknowledgement packet, whereas UDP does not.
