LI4 and SP6 to tonify Qi and blood, do you want to apply tonification or reducing methods?
LI4= tonify qi and blood
SP6 tonify
If you want to use L11 to clear heat, tonify or reduce?
Reduce, dispel pathogenic heat
If your purpose is to clear, transport or reduce, you use which method?
Reduce
If you use to replenish, tonify, reinforce you use which method?
Tonify
T/F According to Dr. Shen, the 7 emotions are not pathological factors?
TRUE - The 7 emotions are mechanisms not internal pathological factors.
What are the interior pathological factors?
LOOK IT UP
What are the 7 evils?
1) wind
2) cold
3) heat
4) summer heat
5) dampness
6) dryness
7) more? look it up
To treat pathological factors you tonify or reduce?
Reduce
T/F You do not do reinforcing or reducing techniques until there is arrival of Qi.
TRUE - Generally speaking
T/F The techniques for arrival of qi are the same as reducing/reinforcing?
FALSE - Though there are similarities. Twirl of needle can be used for arrival of qi but it doesn't consider rotation of direction, which is necessary for proper reinforcing/reducing methods.
If it's an excess condition do you want to retain the needles for a long or short time?
LONGER (for excess with generally stronger stimulation)

Note: If too much stimulation in deficiency there it may be too much for the body to handle. To much "fighting" between the needle and the body.
Why do you retain needles?
Traditionally, to keep qi sensation and should manipulate a couple of times (every 5-7 minutes).
Why should you pull needles out relatively gently (and not force the needle out)?
Patient may have changed positions or muscle fibers may have wrapped around it

NOTE: Dr. Shen to remove a stuck needle, is to push the needle in deeper, rotate back and forth to remove it.
Heavy pressing to the deep level is reinforcing or reducing?
Reinforcing
Small amplitude is reinforcing or reducing?
Reinforcing

Reducing: LARGE amplitude reduce the pathological factors.
T/F Twirling needle slowly is reinforcing?
True

pg. CAM, 348
T/F Clockwise rotation is reinforcing?
TRUE - rotating thumb forward (this is funky...left movement is forward)

NOTE: Clockwise, thumb forward rotation and left all mean the same thing. Left is not a typo. The left is the motion of the thumb.
T/F Reinforcing method with breathing: It's the opposite, breathe out put the needle in; breathe in pull the needle out.
TRUE - When you breathe out, the air goes out and the energy is relatively deficient.

Towards the end of when they are breathing out.
T/F Combination techniques are often used. For example: speed of insertion, gentle manipulation and putting the needle in during exhalation for reinforcing techniques.
TRUE
What are the indications of qi arrival?
Sensation of fullness, cooling and the practitioner can also feel tightening or grasping of the needle or local red area developing
