The presence of Chinese companies in Zambia, and the way they treat African workers were an essential question in the recent elections in the latter country. Consequently, some Chinese companies say they are taking steps to address the problem.

A year ago Taska Chinko, employee in a coal mine, was part of a group of Zambian workers gathered outside the homes of the Chinese managers of Collum Coal Mine in Zambia.

In spite of his bosses not being able to appreciate his efforts, Moono says that since he came to the mine nine months ago, the fact of (his) being there to communicate with workers in their language, and treat them with respect, helped to avoid three situations of unrest .
