Wong and Wong state “the effective teacher spends most of the first week teaching the students how to follow classroom procedures”. Why do you think they made this statement while addressing effective teachers?

How do students seem to respond to this? Page 219 -Ashley. Once the class structure is established you can do many challenging and exciting things with the students. The class should be able to run itself even with a substitute in and the teacher not there. When the students know how the class is run they will be more willing to do whatever you want them to do. After the classroom procedures are established and the students understand them then student learning is maximized.

In your own words, explain characteristics of an effective teacher. * Always Be prepared to teach lesson. Mastery teaching, well organized, know their content, open minded, caring, differentiate instruction.

In my opinion an effective teacher should demonstrate preparedness even in the most improvised moments. What I mean by this is that an effective teacher should be able to identify what the mastery goal of the lesson is, what exactly is the learning that is expected from the students. Once the learning is identified then it will be less challenging for the teacher to select the necessary content and the type of instruction necessary to attained the objective. A teacher should be caring, understanding, patient, charismatic, but this goes without saying. One characteristic that I truly have appreciated to see in other teachers is self reflection. I believe that it is our job to self-evaluate our instructional practices within the classrooms in order to refine the quality of teaching that we provide to our students.
“These scenarios indicate that it is impossible to be an effective teacher without being competent in both subject-matter knowledge and pedagogical ability. Consequently, subject-matter knowledge remains a necessary prerequisite for effective teaching, not the sole determinant.” http://uncw.edu/cte/et/articles/bulger/

What makes an effective classroom? What makes an ineffective classroom?

Page 167 Angela When the teacher exercises control of the classroom, everything is well organized, rules are set in place, teacher is in charge, teacher needs to be very well organized him or herself (stay on task), they know where everything is in the class, teacher has good time management, students need to know where things are in the classroom and be comfortable with the classroom. Also an effective classroom will include objectives, using a multi-methodology when teaching and focusing on the content will help establish an effective classroom. Some ineffective classrooms include when the teacher is just trying to over all the material instead of making sure each student understands the material. When teachers just use textbooks and does not think outside the box or use technology. The difference between and effective classroom and an ineffective class is that in an ineffective classroom the teacher does not know what the students are thinking or knowing, but using the different techniques in classrooms helps create an effective classroom where the teacher knows what the students are thinking, and knowing, which will help the teacher know how and what to teach them.

In what way does an effective teacher build relationships with parents as well as the students? Page 60 Nickalina

Teachers can allow parents to become partners in unleashing the potential of their student. Teachers want their classrooms to be inviting and actually invite parents to be involved in their childs education.
Invitation does not only have to be in written form, a teacher can demonstrate an inviting attitude through behaviors, environment and even thoughts.
For example:
Behavior: smiling, Listening, Thumbs up or high five, holding a door open.
Environment: Fresh paint, Living plants, Clean walls, comfortable furniture.
Thoughts: “making mistakes is all right”, “I’ve misplaced my keys”, “I could learn to do that”…

How and why does dressing professionally influences teaching and teacher effectiveness? Page 52 One of the key ideas in Wong and Wong is “The effectiveness of the teacher determines the level of student achievement”. Explain this relationship.

Page 22 Gianna Dressing professionally influences the teacher and teacher effectiveness because when a teacher dresses professionally it prevents the teacher from self-destructing in the first seconds, before your students make any hasty judgements about you. The effective teacher dresses appropriately as a professional educator to model success.
The effectiveness of the teacher determines the level of student achievement because the more effective the teacher, the more successful the students are. An effective teacher is an innovative planner and exceptional problem solver. An effective teacher is also a creative problem solver, they pull from any available resource to help students learn which helps students achieve more.
Dressing professionally influences the teacher’s effectiveness in many ways. To begin, first impressions are more important than we might think. Most students (just as many other people) make judgments about a teacher within the first seconds of class. This might not be fair, but people do in fact treat people as they are dressed. Therefore, in order to model success, demand respect and attention, a teacher must dress appropriately as a professional educator.
The statement that you make influences how the students will behave and achieve in class. And how students behave and achieve in class will determine your success as a teacher. (pg. 8 W&W)
I think dressing professionally and the student level of achievement are connected because when dressing appropriately a teacher is thought of as an authority figure. Is true that a teacher should be kind and understanding of students but teachers should not behave or look like one of the students. By making this distinction, teachers establish respect and to some extent credibility.

What do you think is the most important quality an effective teacher possesses? Defend your answer.

I believe that an effective teacher possesses a blend of important qualities such as
having positive expectations for student success: the teacher believes in the learner and that the learner can learn.
good classroom management: practices and procedures that a teacher uses to maintain an environment in which instruction and learning can occur.
designs lessons for student mastery: how well a student can demonstrate that a concept has been comprehended, or perform a skill at a level of proficiency, as determined by the teacher.
If I had to single out one important quality of an effective teacher I will have to say “planning”. Teachers that are innovated planners design lessons centered on student learning. Teachers who are organized plan effective classroom strategies and procedures. Finally, teacher who plans ahead are always prepared to teach even if unusual circumstances where to happen.
