What do we mean by performance management?
The process of: a) establishing performance expectations, b) designing and implementing interventions and programs to improve that performance, c) monitoring the success of those.
What is the impact of performance management?
It: a) signals to employees what is important to the org. b) ensures accountability for behaviour and results, c) helps to improve performance
Compare and contrast the purpose of training with development.
Both are concerned with acquiring KSAs. Training is short term and helps improve performance in current job. Development is long term and helps prepare for future job responsibilities, promotions, future jobs.
What are the organizational benefits of T&D?
Organizational strategy (employees have KSAs to acheive org's goals), organizational effectiveness (employees work better, fewer errors, less supervision, positive attitudes, less attrition), employee recruitment and retention (company more attractive)
What are the employee benefits of T&D?
Intrinsic (higher confidence/self-efficacy, feel increased usefulness/belonging), Extrinsic (higher earnings, marketability, job security, opportunities for advancement)
What are the societal benefits of T&D?
Educated population (employees more effective in personal lives), Standard of living (T&D is connected to productivity and job creation)

28 hours per employee per year. 1.75% of payroll. $914 per employee per year vs. $1135.
What is the Quebec training tax?
Organizations with payroll >$1M must pay 1%+ of payroll for govt-sanctioned training, or pay it into a fund. The fund is used for training grants to the orgs that do pay at least 1%.
How is T&D spending correlated to the size of an organization in Canada?
Medium-sized orgs pay more than large orgs who pay more than small orgs.
What factors influence high-performance work systems?
Environmental Factors (legislation, economy, labour market, competition, globalization, technology, demographics, social values) and Organizational Factors (strategy, structure, culture)
