IGMP

Internet Group Membership Protocol - Control Protocol - defines host groups. All group members can receive broadcast msgs intended for the group (multicasts). Can be in same network or exist across networks.

ICMP

Internet Control Message Protocol - Control Protocol - Works with IP in providing error and control info by allowing hosts to exchange packet status info. Two common mgmt utilities used are ping and traceroute used to check network connectivity. Sends notices when buffers overflow, or whether devices can communicate, or connect via network.

UDP

User Datagram Protocol - Transport Protocol - Host to host protocol like TCP. Does not include mechanisms for ensuring timely delivery. Faster, less overhead.

TCP

Transmission Control Protocol - Transport Protocol - Ensures accurate accurate and timely delivery of network communications between hosts. Error checking included.

SSH

Secure Shell - Network Mgmt Protocol - Allows for secure interactive control of remote systems. Uses RSA public key cryptography for both connection and authentication. Uses IDEA algorithm for encryption but can use others, too. Secure and acceptable alternative to Telnet.

Telnet

Remote Terminal Emulation - Network Mgmt Protocol - Allows attached computer to act as dumb terminal, data processing takes place on TCP/IP host computer. Still widely used to provide connection between dissimilar systems.

SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol - Network Mgmt - Protocol designed for mgming complex networks. Lets network hosts exchange config and status info. Can be gathered by mgmt software and used to monitor and mge network.

LDAP

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - Network Services Protocol - Used to allow searching and updating of directory service. Allows client / server model. LDAP servers contain directory data and LDAP client connects to server to make directory request.

NTP

Network Time Protocol - Network Services Protocol - Used to communicate time synch info between systems on a network.

DNS

Domain Name System - Network Services Protocol - system distributed throughout the internetwork to provide addy / name resolution. Name such as www.example.com associated with specific IP addy.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - Network Services Protocol - Method for automatically assigning addresses and other config parameters to network hosts. Using DHCP servers, hosts receive config info at startup, reducing amount of config required on ea. host.

IMAP4

Internet Message Access Protocol 4 - Email Protocol - Retrieval protocol used to enable users to access email from various locations w/out need to transfer msgs or files between computers. Msgs remain on remote server and not automatically downloaded.

POP3

Post Office Protocol 3 - Email Protocol - Part of TCP/IP suite and used to retrieve email from remote server to local client over TCP / IP connection. Usually download msgs then delete them from server, but can dictate otherwise.

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - Email Protocol - Used to route mail throughout network.

SCP

Secure Copy - File Transfer Protocol - Associated with Unix / Linux networks and used to transfer files between systems. Relies on SSH to ensure data and passwords not transmitted over network in clear text.

SFTP

Secure File Transfer Protocol - File transfer Protocol - Uses SSH to secure data transfers. Ensures transmissions are encrypted.

TFTP

Trivial File Transfer Protocol - File Transfer Protocol - Similar to FTP. Lets you transfer files between host and FTP server. No authentication or error detection. Often used for images / video / audio. Faster than FTP, but can have errors.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol - Same - Provides generic method for transferring files. Can include file security through Username/PW, and allows transfer over dissimilar systems. Can transfer both binary and text files, including HTML.

TLS

Transport Layer Security - Security Protocol - Ensures msgs transmitted on internet are private and tamper proof. TLS Record - provides connection security w/encryption. Handshake - Mutual authentication and choice of authentication method.

SSL

Secure Sockets Layer - Security Protocol - Secures msgs transmitted on internet. Uses RSA for authentication and encryption. Web browsers use SSL to ensure safe web transactions (https://)
