Networks consist of a number of computers connected to each other. Software uses this connection to allow communication between software running on different machines.

What is a protocol?

A protocol is a set of rules for communicating between machines.

What is IP?

The protocol the internet uses for addresses. IP stands for internet protocol.

How is stuff sent over the internet?

Routers are used to accept data and to decide where to send it.

Network interface layer?

Responsible for placing TCP/IP packets on the network medium and receiving TCP/IP packets of the network medium.

Internet layer?

Responsible for addressing, packaging and routing functions.

Transport layer?

Responsible for providing the application layer with session and datagram communication services.

Application layer?

Provides applications the ability to access the services of the other layers and defines the protocols that applications use to exchange data.
