Dizziness + Vertigo
Xuàn Yùn - etiology + pathogenesis |
1.Emotional stress:
A.Liver: emotions = Qi stagnation which, in turn, can generate Heat. Heat can damage Liver and Kidney Yin, = failure to nourish the Liver + dysregulation btwn Yin and Yang = Liver Yang to rise hyperactively, disturbing clear orifices + dizziness and vertigo. “All manifestations of Wind, such as dizziness, tremors and twitching, pertain to Liver pathology.” B.Spleen: excessive pensiveness can weaken the Spleen, = failure to generate Qi and Blood + lack of nourishment to the Brain, resulting in dizziness +vertigo. 2. Improper diet, overwork, hemorrhage: weaken SP + ST = failure generate Qi and Blood and lack of nourishment to Brain, = Xuan yun. Sp + St Deficiency.... Accum of Phlegm-Dampness. Turbid Phlegm prevents clear Yang Qi going to the Brain. "No Dizziness no Phlegm" 3. Chronic illness, aging, congenital Deficiency, excessive sexual activity: the preceding factors result in Kidney Essence xu, cant generate Marrow = failure to nourish the Brain. “Insufficient Sea of Marrow = dizziness, vertigo, blurred vision, tinnitus |

Clinical tips for Xuàn Yùn
•In middle-aged and older patients there is a distinct possibility that more severe cases of dizziness and vertigo, particularly crossed by Liver Yang rising, may result in Wind-Stroke. Hence, prevention and prompt treatment of dizziness and vertigo in older patients is very important.
•Preventive measures include decreasing consumption of rich foods and alcohol, abstaining from hot, spicy foods, controlling the emotions, engaging in appropriate physical exercise. |

Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng - definition
Yù refers to any obstruction resulting from stagnation, stasis, accumulation and retention.
The broad concept of Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng encompasses all clinical manifestations caused by stagnation of Qi, Blood, Phlegm, Fire, Dampness, and food arising from internal organ dysfunction or from invasion by exogenous pathogenic influences. |
Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng patterns
*narrow sense, Yù Zhèng = syndrome with a variety of patterns stemming from emotional disturbance characterized by stag + obstruction of Qi flow
* melancholy, moodiness, despondence, depression, anxiety, irritability, or bouts of crying. *Associated manifestations: costal distention or pain and an uncomfortable sensation in the throat (plum pit) |
“All depression can be classified as...
a Liver disease.”
Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng:
Etiology and Pathogenesis: early stage
Early-stage Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng: emotional stress such as frustration, anger, and depression may cause Liver Qi stagnation. Qi is the motive force of metabolism. In a condition of prolonged Qi stag, other pathologies of Blood stasis, accum of Dampness or Phlegm, or Food stagnation may arise as a consequence. These pathogenic factors may, in time, turn to Fire, = another source of stagnation.
Depression Patterns/Yù Zhèng:
Etiology and Pathogenesis: late stage
Later stage Depression Yù Zhèng: early stage one of shi, the later stage is relatively more xu. Constrained LV Qi inhibits the SP function, resulting in insufficient generation of Qi and Blood and malnourishment of the HT Spirit. Deficiency of HT Blood and Yin will lead to KD Yin deficiency with empty Fire.
