Pulse
Speed relates to
Temperature
Pulse
The 3 Speeds:
- Normal (70- 80 beats per minute)
- Rapid
- Slow
Normal Pulse
- 70- 80 beats per minute
- changes by: age, conditioning, and individual constitution
Rapid Pulse
- Excess or deficiency Heat will increase the pulse (As if the blood is boiling)
Slow Pulse
- Excess or deficient cold. Cold slows down the pulse like ice in a river
Pulse
The 4 Strengths and Sizes:
- Long Pulse
- Short Pulse
- Full or Strong Pulse
- Deficient Pulse
Long Pulse
- Excess; most often a Heat pattern
- The impact area will be longer than normal and will extend beyond the typical area where one expects
Short Pulse
- Qi deficiency; often Stomach or Heart
- The area that contacts the finger is short. There is less energy to fill the pulse
Full or Strong Pulse
- Excess; Excess heat, excess cold and stagnation
- The impact will become stronger as if the pulse is "slapping" the finger
Deficient Pulse (Empty)
- Deficiency
- The pulse is soft and weak to the touch
- When pressing on the pulse it gives and has little or no resistance
- Feels soft and without force
Diagnosis and Picking Points
Steps 1 - 3
1. Gathering all the relevant information
2. Determining the proper TCM diagnosis
3. Choosing the correct points
Tai Yang Pair
SI & UB
Tai Yang Pair (SI & UB) Energetic Theme:
- Largest
- Most superficial
= First line of Defense of the body
Tai Yang Pair (SI & UB) common feature:
Regulating aspects of Water
- SI "Separates Fluids"
- UB "Removes Water"
Tai Yang Pair (SI & UB) controls which Relationship?
Fire - Water Relationship
SI is the bridge between
Stomach and Spleen
- ST passes undigested food to the SI
- SI separates everything into "Clean" and "Dirty"
- "Clean" substance is moved to the Spleen
- "Dirty" substance is moved to the LI
SI controls
- Receiving and Transformation
Which points on the SI channel are indicated for disorders of the digestive System?
NONE!!!

- Majority of Yin channels affect the Organ itself
- Yang channels are much less about their Fu and more about where the channel goes
Which points will directly affect the SI organ?
Ren-4 Front Mu of SI
UB-27 Back Shu of SI
ST-39 Lower He-Sea Point of SI
What does the SI do?
- Separates Fluids
- Judgement
SI Separates Fluids
- "Separating Clean from Dirty" aspect is also true for Fluid
- Received Fluid is moved by SI to UB (clean) and LI (dirty)
- Issues regarding Urination considered issues of SI
SI affects Judgement
- "Separating" aspect is reflected in mental aspect
SI Patterns
- Full-Heat in the SI (Excess)
- SI Qi Pain/Tied (Excess)
- Worms in the SI (Excess)
- SI Deficient and Cold (Deficiency)
Heat in the SI
Mental restlessness, insomnia, tongue/mouth ulcers, pain in the throat, deafness, an uncomfortable feeling of heat in the chest, abdominal pain, throat with the desire to drink cold liquids, scanty and dark urine, burning pain on urination, blood in the urine
Heat in the SI
Key Sx
- Abdominal Pain
- Tongue with Ulcers
- Scanty dark painful urination
Heat in the SI
T:
- red with redder and swollen tip
- yellow coating
Heat in the SI
P:
- overflowing-rapid, especially in the 1st position
Heat in the SI
Etiology
- Diet
- Emotional Strain
Heat in the SI
What is happening?
- There is an excess stagnationin the SI that is crating heat
- The heat is moving into other areas of the body
Heat in the SI
Symptom Notes
Insomnia and restlessness
- Heat rises out of the SI and moves upwards into the mind, chest and mouth (via ST) (Insomnia and restlessness)
- Heat signs (Cold drinks, feeling hot, pain)
- The Heat drys out the urine (scanty urine)
- The Heat changes the color of the urine, creates burning, or actual bleeding
SI Qi Pain/Tied
SI Qi Pain:
Lower abdominal twisting pain, abdominal distension, dislike of pressure on abdomen, flatulence

SI Tied:
All of above plus: constipation, vomiting
SI Qi Pain/Tied
Key Sx
- Sudden severe abdominal pain
- White tongue coating
- Deep-wiry pulse
SI Qi Pain/Tied
T:
SI Qi Pain
- white coating

SI Tied
- THICK white coating
SI Qi Pain/Tied
P:
- deep
- wiry
SI Qi Pain/Tied
Etiology
Cold, raw diet
SI Qi Pain/Tied
What is happening?
- Result of excessive eating cold foods and SI being blocked to various degrees
SI Qi Pain/Tied
Symptoms Notes
- The blockage creates severe pain
- Digestion begins to be interrupted (vomiting, constipation)
Infestation of Worms in the SI
Abdominal pain, bad taste in the mouth, sallow complexion
Infestation of Worms in the SI
Different types of Worms and Symptoms
- Roundworms: vomiting of Roundworms
- Hookworms: desire to eat strange objects such as soil, wax, or uncooked rice
- Pinworms: itchy anus
- Tapeworms: constant hunger
Infestation of Worms in the SI
What is happening?
Parasitic Infection
- Take herbs or referral to specialist in anti-parasitic therapy
SI Deficient and Cold
Dull abdominal pain alleviated by pressure, a desire for hot drinks, borborygmi, diarrhea, abundant urination, cold limbs
SI Deficient and Cold
Key Sx
- dull abdominal pain
- abundant urination
- cold limbs
SI Deficient and Cold
T:
- pale body
SI Deficient and Cold
P:
- deep-weak
- slow
SI Deficient and Cold
Etiology
- diet of cold and raw foods
SI Deficient and Cold
What is Happening?
Cold and raw foods are damaging the SI but not creating a severe blockage
SI Deficient and Cold
Sx Notes
Similar to some SP & ST patterns, however the abundant urination points to the SI
