Buddhism
One of the major religions of the world, founded in India about 500 BC by Buddha. Most of the followers live in Sri Lanka.
Hinduism
the major religion of India, one of the oldest living religions in the world. Hinduism has basic beliefs about divinities, life after death, and personal conduct.
Himalaya Mountains
the highest mountain system in the world, extends for about 1,500 miles from northernmost India to the northeastern part of the country. The foothills of the Himalaya have tigers, deer, and rhinoceroses, as well as many wildflowers.
monsoon
a seasonal wind that blows over the northern part of the Indian Ocean, and over most of the surrounding land areas. It is generated by the difference in the heating and cooling of air over land and sea.
alluvial
Land formed of soil left by rivers.
Buddha
a teacher who founded Buddhism, his teachings are called the dharma, and the religious community which he founded known as the sangha.
karma
(law of karma). a belief which states that every action influences how the soul will be born in the next reincarnation. If a person lives a good life, the soul will be born into a higher state, and conversely, if a person leads an evil life, the soul will be born into a lower state, perhaps into the body of a worm.
