Chuang Tzu (Zhangzi)
Book from 3rd or 4th century that stresses illusionary nature of knowledge teaching that Tao is indescribable.
Lao Tzu
Traditionally seen as founder of Taoism. Not all believe he was a real person. No reliable info on him.
Tao Te Ching
Translated "Book of the Way and its Power". Contains philosophy of Lao Tzu. Second most translated book in the Western world.
wu wei
Ideal Taoist lifestyle in which individuals adopt a low profile in life and live in tune with the natural world. "Nonaction" lifestyle. Compared to water (not as weak as it seems)
alchemy
The practice of heating metals to create magical potions.
chai
Taoist rituals performed to rescue departed ancestors' souls from hell.
ch'i-kung
The Taoist system for harnessing the energy of the universe ini the human body; learning to control this power enables people to transcend the limitations of the earthly body.
Chung-li Ch'uan
the chief of the immortals; lived during the Chou dynasty and uncovered the elixir of life.
Eight Immortals
A group of immortals who live somewhere in the mountains or on the Three Isles of the Blessed; traditionally the most popular of the revered immortals in Taoism.
Immortal
A human who has attained immortality through spiritual perfection, and who now belongs to the pantheon of gods.
Immortal Taoism (Hsien Taoism)
Form of religious Taoism that sought healing powers and eternal life for its followers.
Jade Emperor (Yu Huang)
The high god in the Taoist pantheon since the 10th century; also an important deity in traditional Chinese folk religion.
Three Pure Ones
the three highest gods of Taoism; the Lord of Heaven, the Lord of Earth, and the Lord of Humanity.
Three Treasures
