How did tango develop in Argentina ( what mix of people, why were they there, what was the dance like at that time, where was it found?
Freed angolan and cogolese slaves, indigenous and mestizo minorities, European (italy and Spain), immigrants, and latin migrant workers and sailors lived there. They were there because they were marginalized, and because of the beef industry, which employed the people. The dance was a bit sexual - known for the bodies to be touching. It was usually danced with two men because there were more men than women at that time. Low income areas were tense, so the tango kept them from fighting. Tango emerged in low income neighborhoods in Buenos Aires.
How did tango change as it was globalized? (who took it where, how did the dance change? what contributed to its exoticzation?
traveling businessmen took it from the brothels to their home country (nyc and paris). Became sexualized but modesty was kept between the the dancers.
When was tango reimported to to argentina and promoted as a national music? what type of tango was being made official?
re-imported to argentina in 1920s -1930s. The modest, westernized version of the tango became the legitimate in Argentina as national music.
