limited government
Philosophy of limited government with elected representatives serving at the will of the people. The only legitimate government is one based on the consent of the people.
republicanism
Each branch shares its powers with the other two so that no one branch becomes too powerful.
checks and balances
distribution of power between federal government and state government
federalism
refers to the three branches of government: legislative branch (US Congress) which makes laws, executive branch (President) which enforces the laws, and judicial branch (Supreme Court) which interprets laws; Each branch has specific powers, but also has power to check the other two.
separation of powers
Concept that political power rests with the people who can create, alter, and abolish the government. People do this through the voting process.
