when is HB produced? life span of reticulocytes and mature RBC's? How are RBC's killed off? What vitamins and such are required for RBC formation/differentiation?
Reticulocytes should be about 1% of circulation. their lifespan is 1 day, before maturing into RBC's.

remember B12 and folate, and of course, erythropoetin. and iron.
talk about neutrophils and bands -what percentage of circulating WBC's do they make up and what stages are thye? what makes bands go up?
neutrophils are fully differentiated, have around 4 lobes, make up 50 to 75% of circulating WBC's.

bands are the penultimate step - the lobes haven't separated yet and look like a HORSESHOE. bands make up to 13% normally. Higher than 16 = left shift, probably due to infection.

Note that BANDS are not BLASTS!

non-activated neutrophil lasts 12 hours. activated and move into tissue, last a couple days at most.
what do eosinophils and basophils look like?
eosinophils typically have 2 nuclei and bright red granules (eosinophilic).

basophils are the size of PMN's (larger than lymphocytes or RBC's, but not by a lot) - these are FULL OF GRANLUES and you can't usually see the nucleus. These are 1% of circulating WBC's.

note that extra basophils is associated with CML.
what are pelger hewitt cells? what disease?
pelger hewitt cells - bi-lobed neutrophils, connected by a thin band, seen in MDS.
what's the lifespan of a platelet?
8-12 days.
