speak to the ability of viruses to generate energy, where they live, what their genome is made of...
originally filterable.

OBLIGATE INTRACELLULAR PATHOGEN

no creation of own energy.

genome is DNA or RNA.
how are viruses classified?
genetic:
DNA or RNA.

Strandedness ( sense/anti-sense). linear/circular genome.

structural:
capsid
enveloped/non-enveloped
viron morphology.

remember that the envelope is typically a glycoprotein stolen from the host they broke out of.
what are the two ways that viruses can enter cells? describe.
direct fusion and endocytosis.

in direct fusion, receptors on the cell surface interact with viral envelope proteins.

The viral envelope and cell membrane fuse, the nucleoprotein core gets released into the cytoplasm.

Endocytosis.
Virus binds receptor on the host cell - cell endocytoses.

when the vessicle becomes acidified, the envelope fuses to the vessicle membrane, then the nucleoprotein core gets released into the cytoplasm.

so in both of these, you end up with the nucleoprotein core being released into the cytoplasm
in what order are the genes transcribed?
need early genes transcribed first - these are structural and give the genome a place to go.

then synthesize the genome.

the late genes

then assemble/encapsulate.

then release.
what is the iceburg theory? examples of extremes?
that the number of seen cases doesn't actually represent the true number exposed/infected.

in polio, for every person seen, there are 1000 sublinical cases.

in rabies, not so - everybody infected gets sick.

note also that rabies has a REALLY long incubation period, up to a year if bitten on the foot.
