What is Information Technology?

What is Systems Analysis and Design?

The step-by-step process that people use to develop high-quality information systems.

What is an information system?

It is a system that combines technology, people and data to provide support for business functions. Examples include order processing systems or inventory control systems.

What does a Systems Analyst do?

Plan, develop and maintain information systems. They manage IT projects, including tasks, resources, schedules and costs and also conduct meetings, deliver presentations and write memos, reports and documents.

Mission-critical System

A system that is vital to a company's operation.


Ex. Order processing system is vital because a company cannot do business without it.

Hardware, Software, Data, Processes and People

What is Data?

The raw material that an information system transforms into meaningful, useful information.


Ex. Tables store data. Linked tables work together to store data.

What are processes?

The tasks and business functions that users, managers and IT staff members perform to achieve specific results. Represent day-to-day business operations.

What do people have to do with Information systems?

Known as stakeholders and include the management group responsible for the system, the users inside and outside the company who interact with the system, and IT staff members who develop and support the system. (Programmers, analysts, and network admin)

What were the three major business trends in the 21st Century?

Rapidly increasing globalization, technology integration for seamless information access and rapid growth of cloud-based computing and services.

What is e-commerce/I-commerce?

Internet-based buying and selling or social dealings between people.

What is B2C?

Business-to-consumer -- how customers are able to go online and purchase products and services. With the rise of e-commerse, retail stores must now have online stores with a totally different set of marketing, advertising and profitability issues.

What is B2B?

Business-to-business -- volume of transactions is much higher than B2C. E-commerce between two companies uses a data-sharing arrangement called electronic data interchange. (EDI)

What is EDI?

Electronic Data Interchange. It allows for computer-to-computer data transfer usually over private telecommunication lines. It is used to plan production, adjust inventory levels, or stock up on raw materials using data from another company's information systems.

Why is EDI used?

Standard protocols, universal availability, low communication cost and seamless communication between different hardware and software environments anywhere and anytime.

What is SCM and who uses it?

Large firms and government agencies use Supply Chain Management software. Supply chain refers to all the companies who provide materials, services and functions needed to provide a product to a customer.

What is the difference between IT companies then and now?
