The Glass Menagerie 🦁🐴🦋

The plays central symbol. Represents the number of facets of Laura's personality. Like the animals, Laura is delicate, fragile and old fashioned. Glass is transparent but when a light is shined through it it refracts into a rainbow much like Laura's personality. She is bland and quiet around strangers, but to those who look at her in the right light see she is colourful and full of life.

Glass Unicorn 🦄

Represents Laura's peculiarity. Jim says unicorns are 'extinct' hinting that Laura is rare and maybe too old for her time. It also shows her uniqueness and inability to 'fit in' with her surroundings. Jim also breaks the unicorn and the broken figurine represents all he has taken from her an destroyed within her.

Blue Roses 🌹

Jim's high school nickname for Laura that symbolises her unusualness yet allure. It is also a hint towards Tennessee Williams' sister, Rose on whom Laura is based.

The Fire Escape 🔥

An escape from the fires of frustration and dysfunction the rage in the Wingfield household. Laura slips on the fire escape in scene 4, highlighting her inability to escape from the situation. Tom on the other hand, uses the escape as an escape from reality and frequently steps outside to smoke, anticipating his eventual getaway.
