What is Dura-Europas?
A roman city overlooking the Euphrates river that was founded by one of Alexander the Great's successors. Eventually was overtaken by the Sasanians which lead to the inhabitants of the town evacuating and leaving their buildings as they were. The town contains more than a dozen different cult buildings. Includes mono- and polytheistic shrines.
What are aisles?
Aisles are the areas on the left and right of a nave in a church. Usually surrounded by pillars.
What is an apse?
The apse is the part of the church where the shrine is. It is located in the front middle of a Basilica style church, and in the middle of a circular church.
What is an ambulatory?
A covered walkway; especially the passageway around the apse and the choir of a church. Sometimes used to allow people on pilgrimages to navigate around and see the church while mass was taking place.
What is an atrium?
The open, colonnaded court in front of an attached to a Christian basilica.
