The form gained popularity in America and Europe around 1850, and remained a prominent feature of dining rooms for the next quarter century. Sometimes dubbed "the altar of gastronomy," hunt and harvest themes prevail. Roux displayed the prototype for this piece at the 1853 Crystal Palace exhibition in New York. As a result, he was commissioned to make a pair of related sideboards, this one, and its mate, which is now at the Newark Museum. |
