obstruction -> hypoventilation/CO2 accumulation -> respiratory acidosis -> vigorous breathing -> expanded chest/lowered airway pressure -> edema/eversion of laryngeal saccules
Signs for UAO:
-Retracted commissures
-Open mouth breathing
-Orthopnea
-Restlessness
-Cyanotic
-Hyperthermic
-Aerophagia
Emergency tx for UAO:
-O2, cooling
-Sedation (IV opioids in dogs, Ace in cats - minimizes turbulence)
-Steroids (Dexamethasone, Prednisolone)

-If no improvement, intubation/ventilation

-If no immediate resolution, tracheostomy
