AAMI - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instruments

Authoritative source of standards for Sterilization and Disinfection

Antisepsis

Process that greatly reduces the number of microorganisms on skin or other tissues

Bactericidal

Able to kill bacteria

Bacteriostatic

Chemical agent capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria

Biofilms

Dense colonies of bacteria the adhere tightly to surfaces.

Biological Indicator

Quality control mechanism used in the process of sterilization. Closed system containing harmless, spore-forming bacteria.

Case cart systems

Method of receiving clean & sterile equipment & preparing it for transportation to a central decontamination area.

Contaminated

Rendered non-sterile & unacceptable for use in the critical areas of the body.

Decontaminated

Process in which recently used & soiled medical devices are rendered safe for personnel to handle.

Detergent

Chemical that breaks down organic debris by emulsification (separate into small pieces) to aid in cleaning.

Disinfection

Destruction of microorganisms by heat or chemical means.

(Spores are not destroyed by disinfection)

Enzymatic cleaner

Specific chemical used in detergents & cleaners to penetrate & break down biological debris (blood & tissue)

Ethylene oxide (EO)

Highly flammable gas that is capable of sterilizing an object.

Event-related sterility

Wrapped sterile item may become contaminated by environmental conditions or events. (puncture in a wrapper or shelf life)

Evidence-based practices

Methods & procedures proven to be valid by rigorous testing & professional research.

Cavitation

Process in which air bubbles are imploded, releasing particles of soil or tissue debris.

Central Process department

Area of the hospital where medical devices & equipment are processed.

Central Process Technition

Skilled professionals who specialize in processing & maintenance of medical devices in the health care facility.

Chemical indicator

Method of testing a sterilization parameter. (Chemical strip)

Chemical sterilization

Process that uses chemical agents to achieve sterilization.

-cidal

Suffix indicating death. i.e. bactericidal means "able to kill bacteria"

Cleaning

Process that removes organic or inorganic soil or debris using detergent and washing.

Cobalt 60 radiation

Method of instructional bulk sterilization used by manufacturers to sterilize prepackaged equipment using ionizing radiation.

Exposure time

Amount of time goods are held at a specific time, temperature, & pressure during sterilization process.

Fungicidal

Able to kill fungi.

Gas plasma sterilization

Process the uses the form of matter known as plasma (e.g. hydrogen peroxide plasma) to sterile an item. Also known as plasma sterilization.

Germicidal

Able to kill germs (bacteria)

Gravity Displacement sterilization

Type of sterilizer that removes air by gravity.

High Level Disinfection (HLD)

Process that reduces the bioburden to an absolute minimum.

High-vacuum sterilizer

Type of steam sterilizer that removes air in the chamber by vacuum and refills it with pressurized steam.

Inanimate

Non-living

Implant

Defined by the FDA as "a device the is placed surgically or naturally formed cavity of a human body if it is intended to remain for more than 30 days."

Immediate-use sterilization

Items to be sterilized shortly before surgery so they can be ready as close to time of surgery as possible.

(Flash sterilization)

Material Safety Data Sheets

Government mandated requirement for all chemical use in the workplace.

(formation, safe use, precautions, & emergency response)

Medical Device

Any equipment, instrument, Implant, material, or apparatus used for diagnoses, treatment, or monitoring of patients.

Noncritical item

Items that are not required to be sterile because they do not penetrate intact tissues.

( Blood pressure cuff & stethoscope)

Nonwoven

Fabric or material that is bonded together as opposed to interweaving individual threads

Peracetic acid

Chemical used in sterilization of critical items.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Approved attire worn during reprocessing of medical devices & cleaning of patient areas.

Prion

Proteinaceous infectious particle, a unique pathogen substance that contains no nucleic acid.

Process challenge monitoring

Sealed, harmless bacteriological sample included in a load of goods to be sterilized. Sample is recovered following the sterilization & cultured to test for viability.

Reprocessing

Activities or task that prepare used medical devices for another patient; Activities - cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, & sterilization.

Reusable

Designation used by manufacturers to indicate a medical device can be reprocessed for use on more than one patient.

Sanitation

Method that reduces the number of bacteria in the environment to a safe level.

Sharps

Any objects used in health care that a capable of penetrating the skin, causing injury.

Shelf Life

Length of time a wrapped item remains sterile after in been subjected to a sterilization process.

Single-use item

Instruments & devices intended for use on one patient only.

( disposable items)

Spalding system

System use to determine the level of microbial destruction based on risk of infection associated with the area of body where the device was used. *critical, semi.., non..*

Sporicidal

Able to kill spores.

Sterilization

Process by which all micoorganisms, including spores, are destroyed.

Terminal decontamination

Thorough cleaning and disinfection of supplies or an environment (operating room suite). Protocols & procedures are used during terminal decontamination.

Ultrasonic cleaner

Equipment that cleans instruments using ultrasonic waves.

Virucidal

Able to kill viruses.

Washer-sterilizer/decontaminator

Equipment that washes & decontaminates instruments after an operative procedure.

Woven wrappers

These are fabric cloth used to wrap clean, disinfected supplies in preparation for a sterilization process.
