Marbury v. Madison 1803
President Adams signed papers making Marbury a judge. New President Jefferson told Madison to not deliver the papers. Marbury took his case to the Supreme Court. Would the court order the president to deliver and would the president listen to the court.
McCulloch v. Maryland 1819
Maryland passed a law taxing banks. The U.S. bank refused to pay the tax because the states can't tax the National Gov't. Constitution doesn't let Congress create a bank.
Scott v. Sandford 1857
Dred Scott is a slave in Missouri. His master takes him to Illinois, which is a free state. Then he goes to the Northwest Territory where not slavery is allowed. His master then dies and he sues for his freedom. Says he should be free because he was taken into free areas by his owner. Constitution says states must abide by each others laws, and states must follow Congress' laws.
