Lemon v. Kurtzman
Ruled that Pennsylvania's 1968 Nonpublic Elementary and Secondary Education Act violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Act allowed the state Superintendent of Instruction to reimburse nonpublic schools (which were mostly Catholic) for teachers' salaries, textbooks, and learning materials.
Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe
Ruled that a policy permitting student-led, student-initiated prayer at football games violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
New York Times v Sullivan
Allowed free reporting of the civil rights campaigns in the southern United States and is one of the key decisions supporting the freedom of the press.
Gideon v Wainwright
A landmark case in the U.S. Supreme Court History. Sumpreme court unanimously ruled that state courts are required under the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution to provide counsel in criminal cases for defendants who are unable to afford their own attorneys.
Miranda v Arizona
Statements made in response to interrogation will only be admissable at trial only if the prosecution can show that the defendent was informed of the right to consult an attorney before and during questioning and of the right against self-incrimination prior to questioning by police, and that the defendent not only understood these rights, but voluntarily waived them. (Miranda rights read to criminal at time of arrest.)
Griswold v Connecticut
Ruled that the Constitution protected a right to privacy, and involved a Connecticut law that involved the use of contraceptives.
Roe v Wade
The Court held that a woman's right to an abortion is determined by the stage of pregnancy, and the state cannot prohibit abortion before viability. Viability was said to mean "potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid" and was usually placed at about 7 months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks.
