Substance Dependence
A. Maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by 3 or more of the following, occuring at any time in the same 12 mo period
1) tolerance, either:
a) need for increased amounts of a substance to achieve a desired effect
b) markedly decreased effect with continued use of the same amount of the substance
2) Withdrawal, either:
a) the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the substance
b) the same or closely related substance is taken to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms
3) Substance is often taken over a longer period than was intended
4) A persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use
5) Great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the substance, use the substance, or recover from its effects
6) Important social, occup., or recreational activities are given up or reduced
7) Use has continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem.
Substance dependence Specifiers
W/ Physiological dependence: evidence of tolerance and withdrawal
w/o physiological dependence: no evidence of tolerance or withdrawal

A. Development of a reversable substance specific syndrome due to ingestion of a substance
B. Clinically significant maladaptive behavioral or psychological changes as a result of the subs. impact on the CNS develop
C. R/O GMC or other disorder
Substance Withdrawal
A. The development of a substance specific syndrome due to the cessation of or reduction in substnace use that has been heavy or prolonged
B. Causes clinically significant distress or impairment
C. Rule out other disorders or GMC
