The AmericanRenaissance in literature is actually a very specific part of the largerliterary period, the American Romantic period. The Romantic period, whichlasted roughly from 1800-1860, experienced an explosion of uniquely Americanliterature near the end of the time period. Surge of American literarymasterpieces from 1840-1860 is known as the AmericanRenaissance. During the Renaissance, there were two subgenres: the Dark Romantics and the Transcendentalists. It Began as a protest against the general state of culture and society at the time. Dark Romantics did not like puritans and their beliefs. The term dark romanticism comes from both the pessimistic nature of the subgenre's literature and the influence it derives from the earlier romantic literary movement.
