Simple diffusion
is the movement of MOLECULES from a region of higher concentration to one of lower conentration to reach equilibrium. It is passive meaning it requires no energy.
Osmosis
is the diffusion of water molecules through a membrane that is impermeable to the movement of solutes (solutes cannot pass). Water diffuses from higher water concentration (low solute concentration) to lower water concentration (higher solute concentration) until equilibrium is reached
Hypotonic cells
water moves out causing the cell to shrink. more water content in cell than environment
Hypertonic cells
more solute in cells than in surrounding. water moves in causing cell to burst
isotonic
equal solute concentration, nothing happens
