How does water flow?
Water flows from high ground to low ground.
What areas of the city are particularly at risk for flooding?
Areas of low elevation
Near the river
What 2 things are not weather events and why?
Earthquakes and volcanoes because they are plate tectonic.
Weather forms in the atmosphere.
How do properties of air affect these aspects of weather:
-Temperature
-Wind
-Cloud Formation
Temp.-High air pressure --increases temp.
low air pressure-- decreases temp.
Wind: air moves form high to low pressure
Cloud: warm air rises(why? because it's less dense) and cools at high elevation and condenses
The wet bulb temp. on psychrometer drops 9 degrees.
Why?
Humidity?
Why does the temp. drop because the water on the bulb evaporated off.
The humidity would be low.
Dew has formed. What does that tell you about the temp. and relative humidity?
Act. temp. is less than or = to Dew Point and that tells us the relative humidity is 100%. And it's above freezing.
Describe 3 facts that increase chances for an area to flood.
Low elevation.
Being near a body of water.
Living in a city.
Safety precautions for tornadoes:
-seek shelter
-don't go near windows
-get to the lowest ground
Safety precautions for Lightning:
-avoid metallic objects
-stay away from high places
-help anyone who has been struck
Safety precautions for floods:
-keep alert for signs of heavy rains
-get to higher ground
-don't pitch tent in dry stream bed
-don't drive through flooded areas
Describe relationship between thunderstorm, lightning, and tornado frequency.
thunderstorm frequency increases the chance for lightning and tornado frequency.
What factors lead to relationship between thunderstorm, lightning, and tornado frequency?
-fronts (Polar air masses/ Tropical air masses)
-frontal wedging
-warm water currents
Which storm has the highest wind speeds?Which storm causes the most deaths per year?
Tornadoes have the highest wind speeds and thunderstorms causes the most deaths per year.
Which 3 states had fewest deaths per one million persons due to lightning?
Alaska, Hawaii, Pennsylvania
Which three states had the largest numbers of deaths per one million due to lightning?
Arkansas, Wyoming, New Mexico
How is lightning different from thunder?
Lightning is an electrical discharge that produces thunder. Thunder is the rumbling sound.
Why do you hear thunder only after you see lightning?
Because light travels faster than sound.
Is it possible for lightning to strike without rain?
Yes because lightning can strike the ground beyond the parent thunderstorm.
In which season is the frequency of tornadoes the highest?
Spring-early summer
In which season is the frequency of tornadoes the lowest?
Fall-winter
Why do you think that July has a relatively large # of tornadoes, but relatively few deaths?
Because people are more aware.
Why do you think that December has a relatively small number of tornadoes, but relatively many deaths, especially when compared to July, August, and September?
Because people weren't prepared and they didn't expect it to happen.
What river was affected by the flood?
Cedar River
Difference between 100 yr plain and 500 yr plain?
500 yr plain= once every 500 yr the water will reach that land. 2% chance of flooding each yr.
100 yr plain= once every 100 yr the water will reach the land. 1% chance of flooding each yr.
3 things to maintain safety due to flooding
-Raise the levees
-Sandbag
-Evacuate
How do we define violent?
-Death
-Damage
-Wind Speed
-Duration
-Size
Most violent storm in terms of deaths?
Thunderstorms(Floods/Lightning)
Most violent storm in terms of damage?
Hurricanes and Tornadoes
Most violent storms in terms of wind speed?
Tornadoes
Most violent storm in terms of duration and size?
Hurricanes
duration=week
diameter-200-300 miles across
What system do all storms form in?
Low pressure systems.
What clouds do storms form from?
Cloud: cumulonimbus
What do thunderstorm and tornadoes need to form?
Strong updraft- Cold front and warm moist air
What do hurricanes need to form?
Warm ocean water approx. 80 F or higher.
What is Lightning?
a sudden electrical discharge
What are the ingredients needed for hail formation?
-freezing temperatures
-lots of moisture
-strong updrafts
What are the similarities of tornado vs. hurricane?
-both storms form in low pressure systems
-have fast spiraling winds
-both cause damage
both associated with heavy winds
What are the differences between hurricanes and tornadoes?
Duration- hurricanes last longer
Size-hurricanes are much bigger
Location of formation
Different times of year- hurricanes form in fall
tornadoes in the spring.
