Dependant Variable

The factor that is measure or observed in an experiment, also called the responding variable.

Quantitative Data

number descriptions, such as 12 meters long, and 10 seconds

Independent Variable

The factor

Scientific Method

A series of steps used to solve problems.

Experimental Design Diagram(EDD)

A diagram which summarizes the plan for an experiment.

Control

The trial that gets everything but, the independent variable added to it.

-Used to compare to make sure the independent variable actually made the change.

Example: independent variable is water, control gets no water.

Constants

In an experiment, everything is a constant except for the independent variable.

-Everything remains the same in all trials.

Materials

The supplies needed for completing the experiment.

Repeated Trials

Doing an experiment more than one time to make sure your results/data is correct.

-Minimum 3 times

Hypothesis

An educated guess about what is going to happen in the experiment using the words if...then...

Procedures

The step-by-step detailed method you use to conduct the experiment.

Analyze

Look at your experiment data and figure out what it tells you, then put it in a graph.

Conclusion

A summary of what you learned from an experiment.

Metric System

The system of measurement based on multiples of 10, used by scientists.

-Examples of units: meter, gram, liter, and Celsius

Customary Measuring System

The system of measurement that uses inches, pounds and Fahrenheit, used only in the U.S.

Graduated Cylinder

An instrument used to measure the volume of a liquid.

Liter

A unit used to measure volume

Meniscus

Point at the bottom of the curve of the liquid in a graduated cylinder.

Gram

A unit of weight in the metric system

-Measured with a triple beam balance or scale

Inference

An interpretation or reasonable guess based on observation and prior knowledge

Observation

Using all five senses to gather information. Only facts, No options!

Qualitative Data

Data that relates to the five senses, such as circle, orange, and solid, using no numbers.

Prediction

A forecast or guess of what might happen in the future based on current evidence or past experience.
