KWASHIORKOR
malnourishment. Means first-second child, usually because child is weaned due to the birth of a second child. Is the result of a lack of protein in the diet and is commonly seen as children with extended belly.
MARASMUS
undernourishment. Is caused by a total or partial lack of nutritional elements in the food over a period of time. It is usually found in young infants and very young children. It can be prevented by breastfeeding.
DIETARY ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS:
there are 6 amino acids we can’t manufacture alone and are found in cassava leaves which can be stewed. Also found through corn, bean, squash, pepper combination.
DEPENDENCY
one party requiring aid of other organization
PATERNALISM
fostering dependency relationship where “parent” organization does not allow for “child” organization to experience failure. Seen in development when agencies take over the projects instead of empowering the community to lead them.
CHRONIC
a situation that has been occurring for a long time; produce as many calories as consume; worst thing we can do is help; need to provide development response.
ACUTE:
needs immediate relief response. ex) Tsunami, hurricane, flood
ENABLING:
a way of promoting dependency; last thing developer wants to do.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
who will make sure the development agencies are doing what they are supposed to? Some external group should monitor the activities of development NGOs to make sure they are not acting in their own interest.
EMPOWERMENT:
Opposite of enabling. The development agency talks to the community leaders, who will lead the development project. The development agency operates with the goal to leave the community empowered to grow better crops and not be dependent on the agency.
