Cell Wall
a rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. A plant's one helps to protect and support the cell. It's mostly made out of cellulose.
Cell Membrane
Controls what substances come into and out of a cell. Everything the cell needs, from food to oxygen enters the cell through this. It also prevents harmful materials from entering the cell.
Nuclear Envelope
A membrane that surrounds and protects the nucleus.
Chromatin
thin strands containing genetic material
Nucleolus
a small object where ribosomes are made
cytoplasm
region between the cell membrane and the nucleus
Mitochondria
known as the "powerhouses" of the cell because they convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another
Ribosomes
Small, grainlike bodies that are attached to some surfaces of the endoplasmic reticulum. Others float in the cytoplasm. They function as factories to produce proteins.
Golgi Bodies
receive proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell. They also release materials outside the cell.
Vacuoles
large, water-filled sac that floats in the cytoplasm; They are the storage areas of cells. They store food and other materials needed by the cell. They can also store waste products.
Lysosomes
small, round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials in the cell. They also bread down old cell parts and release the substances so they can be used again.
Nucleus
the cell's control center; directs all of the cell's activities
