What is a structural support?
A member that supports something.
What are the most common shapes of structural supports?
Columns, piers, and walls.
Do columns have to be round?
No, they can be square, rectangle, square, or even oval.
What is compression?
A load that pushes from the bottom and the top.
What is tension?
A load that pulls from the bottom and the top.
Give an example of what compression looks like in a column.
Pushing downward and upward will cause the support to push outward in the middle or buldge outward.
Give an example of what tension looks like in a column.
Pulling outward from the bottom and top will cause the support to pull apart or snap.
