Define Stroke |
Loss of blood flow to a region of the brain due to a blocked or bleeding artery. |

What is a transient ischaemic attack (TIA)? |
temporary blockage of blood supply to the brain- lasting a few minutes. Symptoms disappear within 24hours. |

What causes an ischaemic stroke? |
1. atherosclerosis of major vessels supplying brain tissue. 2. Vessel then narrows due to plaque & platelets |

What causes a hemorrhagic stroke? |
Bursting of major vessels supplying brain tissue, blood escapes and fills spaces in the brain. |

What are the three types of Ischemic strokes? |
Thrombotic- atherosclerosis blocking/narrowing vessel Embolic- a 'wandering' clot becomes lodged in an artery leading to the brain Hemorrhagic- HTN large riskfactor |

Age, sex, ethnicity, HTN, impaired glucose tolerance, smoking, diabetes, oral contraceptives, physical inactivity |
