What is stress?
a perceived, or actual, threat. It taxes the body’s coping abilities.
What are the levels of stress situations (4)?
Acute, short bursts of stress caused by a threat, and Chronic, ongoing stress without end in sight. Episodic acute, which happens regularly (daily traffic) and traumatic.
What are the four types of stress?
Frustration, obstructed goals. Conflict, incompatible motivations. Change. Pressure, conformity.
What is the relaxation response?
When stress goes away as the threat is gone
What is acute stress disorder?
A result of the body’s inability to activate the relaxation response.
What are the three types of conflict?
Approach-Approach- a choice between two or more seemingly good choices. Avoidance-Avoidance- a choice between two or more seeming bad choices. Approach-Avoidance- a choice between two or more choices that have good and bad factors.
How do we appraise stress? Primary and Secondary.
Primary, is it irrelevant, relevant (non-threatening), or threatening. If threatening, the secondary appraisal looks at body’s resources for coping
Why can the endocrine system be our enemy?
We do not often have actual threats, therefore it taxes the body’s resources needlessly.
How does the body respond to stress?
Increase of blood pressure and breathing to draw more oxygen into the body. Immune system is dampened. Digestion is halted.
What is the General Adaption Syndrome? What are the steps? When does illness kick in?
Starts with Alarm, where a threat is recognized, but quickly switches to resistance, where the body tries to cope with the stress. If it is unable to cope, the body reaches exhausted, and illness kicks in.
What are the 4 main emotional responses to stress?
1. Annoyance, anger 2. Anxiety 3. Sadness, grief 4. Positive emotions
What is the inverted U hypothesis?
shown by the graphs, the inverted u is the ideal amount of arousal and task difficulty to enhance performance.
What are psychological effects of stress?
Burnout, PTSD, and impaired memory and performance.
What is burnout?
Physical and mental exhaustion. Most common for physicians, school workers, and attorneys
What is the benefit of stress?
Helps build resilience, develop new skills, and re-evaluate priorities
What is a hardy personality?
Hardiness is a group of personality traits that protect you from the effects of stress. Hardy people love challenge, they see it as a way to grow, they commit themselves to their goals, and they feel as if they have control over their lives.
What gender is more prone to hardiness?
Females! They have more body fat (more stored energy), and estrogen and oxytocin are known to lower stress levels.
What are Type A and Type B personalities?
A- stressed, hostile, competitive. B- relaxed, calm, not competitive. A is more prone to heart disease.
