Define Stigma
labeling, stereotyping, a mark of infancy, discredit, spoiled social identity, disqualifies pt from full social acceptance,*discrepancy and difference between virtual & actual social identity
What chronic illnesses or disabilities may stigmatize a person?
diabetes, AIDS, mental health issues, deformalities, obesity, down syndrome, COPD
What's the diff. btwn Discredited and discreditable?
Discredited is when the difference is obvious (limp, o2 tank, missing limb).
Discreditable is when the differences are NOT obvious (AIDS, HTN, early liver f.) puts the pt at risk for being stigmatized
Types of Stigma
*Physical deformity: deficit btwn expected norm of perfect physical condition and actual physical condition. Changes in physical appearance or fxn.

*Character blemish: "weakness" in character caused dz (AIDS, ETOH, mental illness)

*Prejudice: when one group precieves features of race, religion, or nationality of another group as deficient compared to their own socially constructed norm.
How might a stigma influence our perception of a person with a chronic illness?
- Less Intelligent
- Less Worthy
- Less credibility
- Neglect
- Label (stupid)
- Pitty
- Childish
- They can't make decisions
What is courtesy stigma?
Stigma caused by close association with someone who is stigmatized (Not one of the three types of Stigmas).
Describe how an individual might perceive their illness and increase/decrease a stigma.
1. It's part of them but not who they are = less likely to be stigmatized.
2. When it becomes their identity they are more likely to be stigmatized.
Virtual social identity
What society expects. Social settings and routines tell us which categories to anticipate.
Actual social identity
1. Physical activities
2. Professional roles
3. The concept of self
How does ambiguity relate to stigma?
Not what you expect; more likely to label, stereotype. (please add more to this if you have a better definition i wasn't paying attention :))
If an abnormality is ambiguous, and value is put on that body part, it can lead to stigma.

How do those that are stigmatized respond to others?
- Disregard
- Isolation
- Secondary gains
- Resistance
- Passing
- Covering
Disregard
Individuals who are relatively comfortable with themselves.
Gives person a good self-concept.
However if they always disregard then we don't learn from them.
Isolation
Someone who stays within their own group.
Support groups = positive
If that is the only way they function = negative
Secondary Gains
Freed from certain roles that caused pressure (bread winner).
Don't have same expectation of yourself and others don't have same expectation of you. Allows you to fulfill roles in other ways.
Passing
Normal; individuals who want you to assume they are normal. Helps people maintain integrity. Can't help them or teach them.
Covering
Use humor to help others feel comfortable. Deemphasize the negative.
How do "normals" respond to those with stigmas?
- Devalueing - think less of them.
- Stereotyping - take generalizations of certain groups and assume it applies to everyone.
- Labeling - Usually negative. Name we attach to people.
Active-Passive model for care
No input from the client.
Client acted upon.
Used in emergencies situations.
Guidance-Cooperation
Client seeks help, is told what to do and is excpected to follow through. Client does not question. No consideration of client's goals.
Mutual participation
Equal power between care provider and client.
In-service education for staff
Sharing information with other staff members or in the community.
Nonacceptance of Community Education
Society does not accept them fully into the activities everyone else does.
Nonparticipation of Community Education
Client decides not to participate....
