Early testing for HIV helps people to stay healthy and reduces the spread of infection in the community. There is no vaccine or cure but medication can manage HIV-related illnesses and AIDS.

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmissible infection (STI) that can be easily treated. Syphilis may have no symptoms, so regular sexual health check-ups are recommended for people at risk. Currently, these include men who have sex with men, and people who have sex in countries where there are high rates of syphilis. Condoms and dams reduce the risk.

What is pubic lice?

Pubic lice (Phthirus pubis), or crab lice, infest pubic hair. They can also sometimes affect the hair of the armpit, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and torso. Pubic lice are usually sexually transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact. Lice infestation causes no serious harm, but is a warning that you should be tested for other sexually transmissible infections (STIs).

What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that causes inflammation of the liver. It is commonly spread through sharing unsterile needles, syringes and other injecting drug equipment. There is currently no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C infection, but treatment is effective for some people. When the initial infection lasts for more than six months, it is called chronic hepatitis C, which may lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) occurs when an infection spreads from the vagina to the cervix, the endometrium (lining of the uterus) and the fallopian tubes.
