scatterplots
show the association between two quantitative variables measured on the same cases
direct assocaition
a positive direction or association means that, in general, as one variable increase, so does the other. When increase in one variable generally correspond to decreases in the other, the assocatiation is negative
form association
the form we care about most is straight, but you should certainly describe other patterns you see in scatterplots
strength association
a scatterplot is said to show a strong association if there is littler scatter around the underlying relationship
y-axis
response variable
x-axis
explanatory or predictor variable
correlation coefficient
a numerical measure of the direction and strength of a linear association
kendall's tau
a statistic that measure how close the relationship between two variables is to being monotone
spearman's rho
a correlation computed on the ranks of data values rather than their numberic values
lurking variable
a variable other than x and y that simultaneously affect both variables, accounting for the correlation between the two
