experiment

When subject is treated

Observational Study

Look at something that happened

Population

the whole group

Sample

part of the population

bias

sampling method that systematically favors one outcome

Voluntary response Sampling

a pole or survey where responding is optional

Convenience Sampling

choosing individuals because they are easiest to reach

Question Word Bias

Question is asked in a manor that can cause results to be bias

Simple Random Sample (SRS)

Every possible sample of the desired size has an equal chance of being selected

In all well designed experiments

Stratified Random Sampling (Block Design)

Whole group is divided into groups of similar characteristics ( age, gender) important to the study. Then take SRS of each group and combine them to form full sample

Cluster sampling

Population divided into different groups and then do a random sample to decide which groups we look at.

Undercoverage

Some groups are left out of the process of choosing the sample. No fault of their own they dont have an opportunity to be in sample.

Nonresponse

Individuals refuse to answer

Response Bias

People don't answer questions honestly. the questions or questioner influences their answers in some way

Matched Pairs

Match up each subject with someone that is similar in some way
