Descriptive Statistics

Involves arranging, summarizing and presenting a set of data in such a way that useful information is produced.

Variable

Some characteristics of a population or sample.

Values

Possible observations of the variable.

Data

Observations of the variables (datum is singular).

Interval

Real numbers (ex: Distance between 30-40 is the same as 70-80)

Quantitative

Interval data, meaurments of data (ex: how many, how much)

Qualitative

Non-numerical data (such as rating a movie fair or good)

Nominal

Catatagories

Ordinal

Ordered nominal number

Frequency Distribution

Method of presenting data in groups

Relative Frequency Distributions

Frequency distribution giving the percentage each class represents of the total.

Bar Chart

Chart in which vertical bars represent data in different categories

Pie Chart

Circle subdivided into sectors representing the proportion in each catagories.

Histogram

Graphical presentation of a frequency distribution

Symettric

When both sides match

Positively Skewed

Histogram with a long tail to the right.

Negatively Skewed

Histogram with a long tail to the left.

Modal Class

Class with the largest number of observations

Binmodal Histogram

Histogram with two modes. Has two peaks, not nessasarily the same height.

Stem and Leaf Display

Display of data in which the stem consists of the digits to the left of a given point and the leaf the digits to the right.

Cross-Sectional Data

Data measured across a population at the same time.

Time-Series Data

Data measured on the same variable at different points of time

Line chart

Obtained by plotting the points representing the frequency of a category, above the point on the horizontal axis representing that category then joining the points.

Scatter Diagram

the plot of points of one variable against another which illustrates the relationships between them.

Linear Relationship

One in which two variables tend to increase to decrease in the same proportion.

Unimodal Histogram

Histogram with a single peak.
