Time series

A set of observations taken at intervals over time

Time series graph

A graph showing how the variable alters over time

Trend line

A line drawn through the points on a time series graph to show the trend

Moving average

An average worked out over successive observations. The number of points of observation should cover one cycle. Moving averages are plotted at the midpoint of the time interval they cover.

Seasonal variation

A pattern of variation either side of the general trend that repeats itself in cycles

Average season variation

The mean of all season variations for that season
