* Statistics *
Branch of mathematics that deals with the COLLECTION, CLASSIFICATION, DESCRIPTION, and INTERPRETATION of data.
C C D I
A Statistic
A number resulting from manipulation of sample data according to certain specified rules (formulas).
Population
A specified aggregate of anything. - A SET

can refer to Theoretical or Hypothetical values!
All human residents of the town of Gotham in January 2006.
Sample
A section or subset of the population in question, which is representative of that population.

The intent of sampling is always to acheirve a *Representative* sample of the populaiton in question.
Representative
Four Random Sampling Methods
1.) Random / -quasi random

2.)Stratified & Quota

3.)Convinience (incidental)

4.)Purposive
Random Sample
Two criteria:
1) Every individual or thing in the population has the same chance of being chosen for the sample.
2)Selection of one individual or thing in no way influences the selection of another.
Convieniece Sample
Any subset of the population chosen because it is readily accessible.
Purposive Sample
A sample chosen because it mirrors some larger group or population.
Populations and Samples
-Populations and samples need not always be of people, animals or objects.
-The responses given by an individual subject in an experiment constitute a sample drawn from the infinite number of possible responses that could constitue that population.
-IN this case then, the population is Hypothetical(or theoretical)-doesnt really exist
Populations Can Be...
Hypothetical or theoretical
Parameter
A property descriptive of or belonging to the population.
They are often hypothetically or indefinitely large so estimated.
-Belong to population
-Estimated
-notation is greek think (the meew sign)
Variable
A property or measure whereby the members of a group or set differ from one another.

Age,gender,attitudes,test scores,performances on a specified task.
Distribution (or series)
A set of values or measure(scores) of some specified variable.
in a sample of 30 induviduals differing in age, the ages themselves constitue a distribution.
